I live in Canada, I have a disability and 2 wonderful cats. I've been stuck living renting a small room in a relative's house, unable to find housing that's both affordable and allow pets.
It's not just BC, and Ontario isn't much better. Yes Ontario has laws regarding animal rights, but good luck trying to find subsidized/low income housing for people with pets...that's not a crackhouse.
The same laws are across Canada, people who have animals because of their disability, ie seeing eye dog do have the right to keep their pet no matter where they live.
The tricky part, is proving the neccessity of pets. I would be lost without my cats, they keep on a schedule, wake me up in the morning when they want to be fed, remind me I need to eat, meow when the there's someone at the door and when I didn't hear them. The list goes on.
In my current situation, I'm not going to bore you with details, but I am unable to find housing while on provincial disability and owning pets, unless I find a job. So, I spend all my time looking for ways I could earn an income within my limitations. It's cruel and horrifying, I really don't need this kind of stress and I'm making myself sicker.
Allof this, just because, I love my cats.

I'm so glad I live in Ontario, and I never thought I'd ever say that. Under our provincial human rights code pets cannot be banned in whatever type of housing you have , subsidized or otherwise.
When I was first searching for an apt, I told a landlord that one day I may have to have a guide dog and he said , no pets. I said a guide dog is NOT a pet it's a working service animal. He said no pets. I said to him, if I were you I'd talk to my lawyer about that one because if I decide to take the apt ( and I didn't ) I'm going to sue your butt off and say you are disciminating against my human rights as a legally blind person.
A few days later, after I'd found another apt, the initial landlord called me very sheepishly and said I'll rent you the apt, apparently guide dogs AREN'T pets. I told him what he could do with his attitude and his apt.
When I got my first cat , I actually had my physician write a prescription that I gave to my landlord that said he prescribed that I get some kind of a small animal that I could easily take care of for my emotional and mental well being.
I'd really love to see that one get into the media ....surely you still have contacts you can talk to about this. And use Ontario as the example ....
I knew BC was different but I now think I understand the nickname it's acquired in the rest of Canada and it's appropriate.

Way too many to be even considered a messenger from God Curiously everything was relatively calm until Momo arrived on the scene to stir things up, most (if not all) of the battles were started by Momo, more were fought when he unceremoniously passed away Many more battles and bloodshed are still being perpetrated because of the lunacy of this man and his viral book (the queeran) that keeps a considerable part of humanity still living and acting according to dark age reasoning Oh God when will we be relieved from this scourge and cancer? When will this planet truly enter the 21st century without the senseless and barbaric doctrine of a fake prophet, high on camel urine? Edit Premarin = Pregnant mares urine, used primarily for women with menopausal problems Makes perfectly sense Momo needed the camel urine (was he a hermaphrodite or were his female hormone levels low?) Peace

Of corse its wrong. I'm not familier with how the Canadien sstem works--but the only way you will stop this--or make any other positive changes--is by organizing--and making disabled people and their concerns highly visible. That works--its how we've made progress in the USA. We still have a long way to go--but practically all our gains stem from organization, publicity, and protest.
Don't expect fairness, honesty, or understanding from the kind of people who do things like this. You simply have to push back. The only thing a bullly understands is someone standing up to him and refusing to back down. They live in fear--and the one thing that absolutely terrifies them os a person who is not afraid and won't be intimidated into compliance or silence.

While I have to dissagree with your words the "BS Ministry" because it's sacreligious, I do however agree with you on the animal thing. I love animals and I would'nt live anywhere that did'nt allow pets. Simply put it is BS. What's the big deal as long as you don't have a zoo in your place?

Yes I agree with you, I'm going through a divorce and I have one dog two cats, and a bunch of smaller pets, I for the time being live in a less than desirable area, but it's a pit stop for me it's very important for me to keep everyone together.

There's lots of apartments in the US that say no pets (whatsoever) or have restrictions on the size of pets and what types. I'm sure it's not just a low rent/disability thing.

That is so wrong! And what about a person with a seeing eye dog?
There are pets which can be hidden, like cats, and smaller mammals. I've done it before. My cats are part of my family; they help me to focus, to get out of bed and to not feel depressed when things get over whelming for me.
