i happen to be writing a book right now and my aunt is an author and the best advice she gave to me is to write the parts you feel like writing and save what you dont want to do for another time and then later piece it together...it has really helped me get past writers block more than once. there's that and then she said no matter what you're writing, get to know your charaters, think outside of the box when you imagine them, like try to imagine what they would be into, if you see a shirt you like or something like that ask yourself, "is that something my character would like too?" once you are able to build on their personality it gets easier to write when you know who you're writing about.
anyway hope it helps

OK, prepare for lecture # 673b: You must have a start. The start should catch the readers' attention in the first few lines; You must develop the reason for a story (all the who, what ,when, where, and most especially, WHY things); if it is a fact-based story, the facts need to be logical and relate; if it is a person-based story, the person gets a little slack on the logic, but not much; yu ned t spil rite (SEE? You stopped and said to yourself, "what?" - which interrupts the flow of the story to the reader - do not make spelling or grammar errors!); you need to wrap up the story with the conclusion where you want the story to arrive for the reader (hint: most people do like happy endings). You need to tell the story. Descriptions should AID the story, not divert it. And it needs to be interesting all the way through. Good luck!

A good tip would be to start out in action scenes. Not an over the top action scene, but something that grabs the readers attention. As for being stuck, I cannot offer much advice. Sometimes when I am suffering from an episode of writer's block, I read a good book that is not too similair to mine (I don't want to have the same book), but of the same genre. It helps me to critique and compliment the different writing styles and story lines.

Sometimes I try to rewrite the story from a different point of view... like if you're writing about a husband and wife, telling the story from his point of view, try it from her point of view... or from a close friend trying to understand what's going on in thier friends' lives...

or if you are writing it in third person, try first person...

or go back to earlier in the story and twist it off in a different direction..

PLAY with your writing... you can always put it back the way it was, but it might open you up.

One time I was stuck with a story... and I started reading On The Road by Kerouac... And as a game, I went back and tried to re-write my story like the way On The Road was written... it was a fun exercise, and I liked it better, it loosened me up, and when I rewrote and edited it again, I wrote it halfway between Kerouac and the original...

Explain STUCK? A story follows it's nature bent and has a beginning that grabs the reader, and middle that lays out most of the problems, conflicts of characters, and the end where you pull all the elements together for a satisfying conclusion.

you can read a story book or think of one you loved reading and use it as a template. By the way did you know that there are millions of stories locked up in your own brain. Your brain keeps recording every moment of your life. May be you can search for ideas from there. you may also read up some ideas here http://searchyourbrain.blogspot.com and http://story.seo.googlepages.com/index.html

Always write what you know...that's most important!

If the story isn't going anywhere, it might be going out of your area of experience. Bring it back into things you know more about, more like your daily life experiences you can relate to...
