The starters don't play much in the preseason, so the backups play like there is no tomorrow...And when its a team like the Raiders or Lions, it doesn't matter whether its the starters or backups...They still will suck...

Because some teams have better backups than others in the preseason starters only play about one quarter of the game and the backups play the rest. The starters know that they have made the team so in preseason if they mess up it's not as bad as say and undrafted rookie free agent trying to make the team if he messes up then he probably won't make the team. As for the backups teams such as the Colts for example don't really have a very good back up quarterback unlike say the Jaguars who have two guys in Leftwich and Garrard who can start and win games.

The colts generally lose every single preseason game. The teams that do well in the preseason are generally the worst teams in the league because they know the only chance they have to win all year is by playing their starters against the better teams rookies and second/third string.

Some teams (like the Redskins) do good in preseason because they actually put in their good players, play hard and then they get hurt (Clinton Portis) so they suck during the year. Smart teams save their good players for the regular season so this doesn't happen. The preseason means nothing and is a waste of time, it should be two games max.

huge difference between preseason and regular season. first of all it's not as intense as a real game, they coaches dont care that much if they win or lose. i think the colts had 0 wins in the preseason last year and look what happened. the starters dont even play in preseason because they want to avoid getting injured. so it's a colts team without manning, harrison, wayne, etc...of course theyre not going to win.

Most teams aren't trying to win preseason games and the protect their good players to prevent a chance of injury some teams have a new coach who wants to get his starters in rhythm with each other so they play the starters usually against other teams bench warmers.

Good teams often know they are good and don't put in the full effort in preseason. Also, good teams are generally looking more at 2nd and 3rd stringers and developing depth. Bad teams often have new coaches how are trying to implement new offensive and defensive systems and will play the #1s and #2 longer and, hence, will win more in preseason.

because no one tries in preseason, preseason is only for the purpose of getting your young backups playing time, by the end of the first quarter it is usually all backups playing, preseason isn't really about winning or losing, it is about warming up and getting young guys reps
