we often do crazy things, knowing that that they aren't for our good. a lot of what we do makes no sense--always working and working to get more toys and devices that we don't have time to use since we are working. we invade countries and kill people in the name of democracy but live in a country where the president wasn't even elected. we go and kill animals for sport, with no odds for the animal. and on and on.

I think that might be painting with too broad a brush....Humans by NATURE are irrationally sane people but I think just like our diet we are a mix of both reason and irrationality. If you want to draw your generalization in closer you can say that most men are mostly rational and most women and mostly irrational since women tend to think through feeling and men tend to think through logic. Also the definition of sanity is too relative to be used in that general of a statement.

Irrationally sane? Huh?

What is "irrationally sane?"
Do you mean intuitive?
Or are you saying you think people are basically crazy?

I think people are basically decent but a little confused and scared too much of the time...

You are just beginning to look at the mysteries of the human and its life. I believe you will need to keep learning more than is taught in the education system . Society has developed some well kept secrets and you are getting real close. Start with seeing all upper level mammals as having three brains. The first one and the later evolution of the two upper lobes we call the brain. The first one has all the wires running through it and it controls all the five basics for life like blood, air ,balance temp etc.

I believe humans are rationally insane!
In our insanity it seems rational to destroy our environment for profit and pretend nothing is happening.
No there is very little evidence of "sanity" now days.
If humans were 'irrationally sane' we could expect a return to sanity at some time.
So what do you say?
Do you see that happening any time soon?!

Sometimes yes sometimes no

I read recently that about 1/3 of the time any one of us would qualify for a stay in the booby hatch.

That sounds right....About 1/3 of the time I wish they'd put me in so I could rest and have my meals prepared.

We all have our illusions and our delusions. So, yes, we are irrationally sane.

Considering the chaotic and ever-changing world we live in, I'd say humans collectively are rationally insane.

Yep! We are the only species that worry if we are mature or if we are seen as mature. Think what we would be if that was not the case. How would we determine who is sane and who is just enjoying their inner child. Tag your it! Sorry, just my inner child!

Well, if you think too much it could drive you crazy, but if you don't think at all, they may pronounce you dead and throw dirt in your face. You probably should pick somewhere in the middle of the two extremes.
