Ok, Imagine yourself driving 93 mph on your car on Interstate 23, when you were going to visit some relatives. In the freeway, the traffic is heavy behind you, then out of nowhere an old lady is crossing the street, you couldnt stop.

What would you do?

Would the police be involved?

1.) Run over the oldd lady? You feel that you have to. If you don't six cars running over 95mph will crash behind you when you hit the brakes.

2.) Swerve to the side. You would hit another car, but at least you saved the old lady.

3.)Hit the brakes, The old lady is saved, but the cars driving behind you are not. You probably have killed twelve people.

What would you do and why?

That's a difficult question.

What the hell is an old lady doing on the freeway? She has no business there, unless she wants to kill herself.

I would run the lady over. It's not that i have no feelings for the elderly. Imagine all those cars around you. If you tried to save the old lady, other cars around you and behind you would crash into you. But If you hit the old lady you would save more lives. It's better to have one person who should have stayed out of the road get killed rather than 12-20 people.

It's also better to hit her because if those cars crash into you, you are responsible for all the cars that crashes into you, there would be countless lawsuits, you have to pay restitution to the family of whome you killed, and you(or your insurance company) Will have to pay for all the damages you caused to those vehicle.

This is a difficult decision, but it's for the best.

In a real life situation, I don't think you'd get the chance to think out possible scenarios.

In a split second, could you check your revision mirror to see how many were behind you & try to judge how fast they were going?, then check out the lanes next to you?, while at the same time wondering if you were having a hallucination, as it's not a common sight seeing an old lady crossing the freeway?

Also if you expected the worst, you'd probably be assessing whether your insurance is paid up, whether you got rid of the weed in your trunk, and wishing you'd put on clean underwear that morning. Visions of police going through your car & personal belongings.

Visions of you being cut out of your mangled car, with old lady guts spattered across your windscreen. Then you'd be going through a whole heap of emotions, anger at the old lady, fear that you're gunna die, pride that you could be on the evening news, regret that you never bothered to sqeeze that zit on your forehead & the TV cameras would be sure to pick it up.

Then you'd think of your family & loved ones. Do they REALLY know how much you care about them? Have you got time for a quick phone call? Where's your cell?

All in a split second.

So, I think you'd resort to a reflex reaction, by slamming on the brakes & swerving, covering your face with your arms & hoping that those airbags work.

Well first of all I wouldn't be driving 93mph down Interstate 23.
Secondly, if I had to, I would swerve and survive, I'm a good driver. If the old lady is within site then I have had at least the split second I need to determine when needs to be done.
Point is, I would not hit her, sad thing is, since I am in front, the cars behind me prolly would not have time to react...hence, ole lady go splat!

In reality in this situation we'd have to think quickly! There would be no time to hesitate or weight the possibilities....
But I would swerve as a reaction. I would never want to hit someone! At least people are protected in cars! (I would never drive that fast in the first place)
I have to wonder about the people who said they would hit the old lady.

I would run over the old lady. I would be alot more upset if I slammed on the brakes or swerved out of the lane and killed a child. The old lady had lived her life and it's obvious that she was mentally ill or she wouldn't have been trying to cross the freeway on foot.

Dummy.

Why did the speed go from driving 90 to driving 93 but all the cars behind you are going 95 ? You don't make good scenarios.

Option two is the one with the lowest probability of killing anyone, and swerving would be my first instinct anyway.

...Seriously, though, this scenario is kind of cracked. And there isn't an "Interstate 23" anywhere in the country, last time I checked.
