Some people have terminal illnesses or are in constant chronic pain and are all alone.
Many people tend to say about suicide, "How can you do that to your family" but they don't take into consideration that there are hoards of people who have no one in their lives.
So, they are left sick, alone and feel there is no hope for quality of life. Add to that the horrific lack of health care for those that are uninsured (or insured-see "Sicko") in the U.S.

The biggest reason is mental illness. All the above reasons are good ones but they are also situational. Most people going through these things can understand that even though they are very sad or frustrated or whatever, the feelings will eventually pass.
Mental illness makes a person feel horrible for no apparent reason. Everything in the world can be going your way and you can still not imagine how you can go on.
That is why when someone commits suicide everyone tries to find a reason but nothing makes sense because only someone who is mentally ill can fully understand.

Feeling like, "What's the point..."
And that perhaps there will be some peace at the other side of being dead from this life as they know it.
You do this, that and the other thing, go through pain and sorrow, watch as governments are destructive, people are cruel to one another, etc. etc. etc. and then die in the end anyway, so suicide is a why to just get it over with-that way you don't have to struggle to pay the bills, just for basic survival, while watching Paris Hilton living high off the hog, just because she was born into it...

Intentional suicides are caused by clinical depression brought about by mental or physical illness. The illness can be short term (i.e. grief and loss, financial worries) or long term (i.e. chronic depression, schizophrenia, fatal disease) but in either case the person is so overwhelmed that suicide appears to be the only way out of their present misery. Chronic drug use can also lead to depression and suicide but in those cases it is usually the drugs themselves, not some internal factor, that are the root of the problem.
Accidental suicides do not involve mental or physical illness and can be caused by just about anything (drug overdose, feeling of immortality brought on by psychotropic drugs, playing with a loaded gun, etc.)

Its mostly due to when a pain of any kind exceeds someone's hope and they no longer are able to deal with it. Most of the time, however, attempted suicides are a desparate cry for help, when a serious problem isn't something you can easily go and ask for help for, but the person can no longer deal with it.

Depression just like someone else said. Umm, something tragic that happened in their lives. Getting raped, some may feel unwanted/neglected and feel as if their life just isn't worth living, getting bullied. Yeah, I really don't think I'm much help.
