I really miss the willow trees I used to see in the mountains of NC. I'm stuck in Florida for the next 5 or so years and would like to plant a weeping willow in my front yard. It will be 20 ft from the house and driveway. My question is, how do willows do in Florida? I'm in zone 9.

They are fast growing and messy, dropping leaves and small branches all the time. Due to the shade they cast and their shallow, water gobbling roots, it is difficult to grow grass or other plants under them. At maturity, it will spread 30 to 40 ft, so will be very close to your house and will dominate, if not fill, your front yard.

If you miss the mountains, consider getting a painting or photo of them and willow trees. You should also be able to find public parks with graceful trees in Florida.

It should do fine so long as it gets plenty of water. They are relatively tough trees and they're actually good to plant in low-lying areas or boggy areas as they suck up excess water.

I live in a zone 9 area and they're all over the place. Very pretty and good for shade too- just make sure you irrigate it well for the first few years until it's well established.

According to my "bible", the Sunset Western Garden Book, weeping willows tolerate all zones, require full sun and lots of water...so, you should have no problems in planting them in your area...

One thing to consider when planting a willow is any underground water or sewer lines - as I understand it, they will spread their roots wide looking for water and can damage lines if they're planted too closely to them.
