While I can't speak for SFSU, I can tell you that UC Irvine's drama program is excellent, as well as UCLA's (though it is quite competitive).

If you want to stay in NorCal, look at UC Davis' acting program. It is very good, and Sacramento is a great place to live!

Honestly, I prefer Northern California's theatre culture to South California's. Don't get me wrong -- living in Los Angeles was a fun experience, but it is quite situated around television and film (which is great if you want to pursue that route as opposed to the stage). I liked the excitement of live theatre, and I found most of the competition to be kind of annoying (ie the models that show up to audition for Fiddler on the Roof, convinced that Steven Spielberg is going to show up to the Saturday matinee and cast them in his next blockbuster).

Good luck!

EDITED TO ADD:

I see you've added me as a contact, which is cool, but I don't communicate outside of Yahoo answers with people I don't know. But since you've added me, I can see the questions that you ask and I'll be happy to give you as much information as I can!

SanFransisco Academy of Art sounds good. The real test is to see if they have actor showcases for agents and casting directors, if they don't, don't bother with them, their training should emphasize performing over exercise and theory. Another measure of the quality of an acting program is how many students they allow in it. For example Julliard allows only 20 and Purchase College allows only 60 and both have showcases. If you cannot get into the very best schools, don;t waste your time and money at a second rate school. Use those years to get professional classes and to gain experience as an actor. You should never stop acting, so if you are not in something right now, start looking to get into something. Want free mentoring for your career? Write me at kencosp@aol.com

I've heard they have a pretty good program but I don't know first hand. I believe they've recently updated their theatre(s)?
UC Irvine had a good program last I knew as well.
UC Berkeley
UCLA
USC

For smaller colleges, Mt San Antonio & Citrus College both have good Performing Arts programs.

Have you looked into Collegeboard.com and linked to individual college sites from there? Maybe you can visit some colleges and see some productions before making your final decision on where to apply.

Good luck with your search!
