This has been a question almost from the beginning of time. Socrates and Plato said yes. And contrary to Mark Anthony's speech, it is the good that largely persists rather than the evil. I would hold on to the love that I have felt in my life and the joy I have in those I love. I trust that this will also be the part of my soul which goes on living in them. It is light which travels in this universe, not darkness. My children and grandchildren already carry a great deal of my soul in the life I've passed on to them. When I leave it will be with open hands, not clenched fists, there's nothing physical I can take with me but must give it all back to life.

Sometimes I feel that awareness is ubiquitous, filling the universe in one form or another, sometimes quite obvious like an ocean, evident but elusive like a cloud...or precious and fleeting like the morning dew on the desert sand.
(either I have had too much coffee or I should start writing a poem :-).
Anyway, I would like to think that our soul is part of that awareness.. existing forever...
If there was one thing about its physical existence I could carry into infinity it would be a memory:
Sitting with a photo album, realizing that it represented something very extraordinary: My awareness had the profound privilege of a lifetime of experiences.
(I'm sure there would be a number of photos of me drinking too much coffee! :-)).

Yes I believe wholeheartedly that our souls last forever, as they are kept alive by those who loved us in our physical body and recognized our souls as precious.
If I could only remember one thing about the physical existence to carry on into infinity, it would be the soft and loving embrace of a loved one, to feel the touch of another loving soul is the most precious of all connective bonds. It is the one thing that overcomes all other things the loving touch.
In this life love is the one feeling that reaches beyond all boundaries and any physical limitations at all. So anyone who knows love can remember touch, I believe they are integral of oneanother.
Blessings and love,
BESS

Don't know anything about souls. Only the mind. But the one thing I would hold on to, I hope, would be curiosity. That way I could embrace whatever infinity held for me, without images of all I left behind which would make me yearn to return. Golly, isn't the thought of death being final a real comfort!

I have a theory about the soul, (or spirit), & it's quite beautiful to me. I won't go into here as it would be too controversial. But I WILL say forever! I'm not sure what you mean by its "physical existence." The spirit itself isn't physical, but it could hold memories, cherished moments from our physical lives? If that is what you mean, I don't know quite where I could begin. I have loved & love so many things.

It is all conjecture. A wise author once stated that "The spirit of people are part of an imprint in the universe, that is reborn again and again, remembering less and less". To think that it would make any difference what we remember after the final closure is presumptuous on the part of any human. Live the way that fits your own conscious and ability, do no ham to others and believe that everything in your life was worth it.

I believe our souls aren't interested in retaining memories. Nostalgia is a human emotion [for lack of a better word]. I presume once free of these mortal bodies, our souls are concerned only with going on to whatever comes next.
Really now, would YOU like to remember puberty for all eternity? :-)
As for your initial question about whether our souls last forever, I believe that time is a human concept in this limited physical plane. Our puny brains can't even begin to grasp what reality is like when we cross over after death. I doubt we'll wear wristwatches, or be bored.

I think that souls really last for ever. There is a myth that says that man is made from spirit and flesh. The spirit was made by God, the body was made by the Devil. The body is like a cage for the soul and eventually it will "rust" like everything else. But if I were to hold on to something, it would be what I learned from my life, the lesson that I was meant to learn. To be a little more specific, my experience from life.

My soul resinates throughout time - the past and presence.
I am a pebble dropped into the endless pool that is life, my actions radiate away from me and bounce off the actions of other pebbles.
I shall hold on to the good I have done, the lives I have bounced off of.
I shall hold on to the memories of those that have blessed my soul with their presence.

soul is nothing but your true self, and your true self is made up of the various emotions you experience, the various moments you go through, your honesty, your truthfulness, your kindness, your care, your love, your loyalty, your wisdom, your will, your motivation, your selflessness, your dreams, your respect for life and living....
as long as these last....the soul lasts....and it can be forever...
and there is not only one thing about its physical existence...its many(all of the above)...i would hold on to the far reaches of the universe...
