It is the spirit of the house. Just settling in for the night. It used to freak me out. Now I love it.

All buildings expand and contract with temperature increases and decreases. All houses settle continually.

Both of the above can cause the creaking you describe. It is normal.

You notice it more at night because there is less background noise that masks it during the day.

Interestingly, in the spring and fall, temperatures drop quickly after sunset causing more noise during the rapid temperature change time. Many seem to notice this more in the fall (probably they are outside in the spring welcoming the onset of warm weather) and people let their immagination run away to consider the noise a sign of haunting - which it is not.

If u have old piping in ur house, it's usually the heat meating the cold in the pipe and it causes a crack.. the noises are just usually do to old housing and conditions with in the walls.
Dont worry it's probably not a ghost.

Expansion and contraction from the change in temperatures. Could also be piping that is rubbing against a stud in the walls. Same reason though.

Something is contracting from cold or expanding from heat. It could be pipes, wood on wood and so on.
