I could have sworn that Rowling said she was going to kill off TWO, read that again, TWO main characters. I ask, who counts as a main character? Fred and Mad Eye were secondary if not tertiary characters, same with Bellatrix and Dobby. Voldemort was the only main character that died. Correct?

From the beginning,
Those who died :
Hedwig
Mad-Eye Moody
Rufus Scrimgeour
Bathilda Bagshot
Ted Tonks( Tonks' father)
Peter Pettigrew
Dobby
Vincent Crabbe
Fred Weasley
Severus Snape
Remus Lupin
Nymphadora Tonks
Colin Creevey
Nagini
Bellatrix Lestrange
Voldemort

Out of these, you could consider Voldemort and Snape to be the 2 main characters but then many people died anyway. Also these 2 have been there right from the beginning.
Snape has been quite an important character in the books being the double-agent Death-Eater, the only teacher who seemingly loathes Harry and the one person who has had a history with his parents as well.
Even before the book came, Voldemort was being considered as one of the 2 main characters. So it's more of a question of who the other could be!

To me Technically Harry did get killed but he came back. Official list that I had to write down to remember everyone/thing that was killed.

Mad eye moody
Hedwig
Scrimgeour (possible main charecter)
Snape
Ted Tonks
Remus Lupin
Tonks Lupin
Collin Creevy
Crabbe
Fred Weasley
Dobby
Bellatrix
Nagini

Most of the little charecters had some kind of impact on Harry for whatever reason so maybe that was the reasoning behind that.

there was also lupin and tonks... lupin is sort of secondary because he does not come in a whole lot after book 3 but he does change in hallows with teddy and tonks and all. snape died too and i consider him semi main because he has been crucial to the story. deaths:
lupin
tonks
mad eye
schrimageor
hedwig
nagini
fred
severus snape
voldemort
ted tonks
dobby
crabbe
bellatrix lestrange
professor burbage
bathilda bagshot who wrote hogwarts a history
collin
and we found out that ariana died.

Wow I completely agree. It mentioned on the tip of e book 6 that each and all of the people who cared for Harry have been being picked off one via one: first his father and mom, then Sirius, then Dumbledore...It in basic terms is smart that the two Lupin or Hagrid will circulate next. in spite of the undeniable fact that, before Lupin does die I honestly have a slump that he would be getting his revenge on Greyback, the werewolf that bit him interior the 1st place. (a minimum of i'm hoping so!) won't be able to look ahead to the e book to return out this summer season!!!

Well, I believe she considered the characters Tonks and Lupin as being somewhat main, considering the fact they are mentioned so often. Besides, she changed a lot of things in this book from her original plan.

I disagree at least about Fred, and even Mad-Eye. Yes, it wasn't really Mad-Eye in Goblet of Fire, but without that character, you technically couldn't have had the Goblet of Fire book. Belatrix is very important in that she killed Sirius. That's a big deal.

Voldemort is a main one but you forgot to mention Hedwig who also dies, and she is also a main one as well. The others are not "main" but still important to the series.

any of these could be main characters, i think:
Tonks
Lupin
Dobby
Voldemort
Bellatrix
Nagini
Hedwig
Mad Eye
Fred
Snape
Scrimgeour
...she might have counted Harry's supposed death

any of those who have been really important or many of the books could count as a main character

Harry and Voldemort both died, but then Harry decided to come back to life, so she stuck to her word.
