U do NOT need to shake them, the ink is held in a sponge like substance in the cartridge.

If it's been sitting upside down for a while, be better to sit it the right way up (as it sits in printer) for an hour before you isntall it to make sure air rises to top, ink to bottom for better flow.

Do NOT shake the cartridge. It causes BUBBLES in the ink cartridge (unless your cartridge is the "sponge" type).

A gentle shake would confirm the presence (or not) of ink in the cart, perhaps that's what she was doing.

DEAR, SHAKE THE CARTRAGE, IF YOU SENCE THE INK SHAKING INSIDE THE CARTRAGE, SHAKE IT AGAIN AND CLEAN THE HEAD OF CARTRAGE WITH A SOFT CLOTH, THEN PUT IT INSIDE THE PRINTER AND USE, OTHER WISE YOUR CARTRAGE ARE EMPTY OR FREEZ. YOU NEED TO REPLACE CARTRAGES.
