women can hold a baby that weighs 10-20 pounds for hours but when women are asked to pick up something that weighs 5-10 pounds, they say "i cant pick it up! its too heavy!!" - whats up with that?!?!

Ummmm, babies are cute? Heavy inanimate objects aren't.

Because they can cradle the baby against their body, taking most of the weight onto their entire body instead of just their arm.
The other items generally have to be picked up and carried by the hands/arms only, and women are not built to have the same upper body strength of men - women's strength lies in their core muscles.
Besides, if she's hauling around a baby all day, why are you whining about picking up a few items now and then? Be a man and help out.

Because there are different weight distributions. I've have NEVER heard a woman say that something weight 5 lbs is too heavy to pick up.

there is a difference in body weight and dead weight. I gave birth to a 10lb 9oz baby and I couldn't hold him for long periods of time either. Maybe some really just can't pick it up depending on what it is and if it's solid weight. A baby really isn't solid weight like say a baker's 20lbs bag of sugar.

Well I have never held my son for hours, but for short periods of time. When you are holding a baby, the weight is distributed differently then when you are picking up and object.

because the weight from a baby is added to your body weight gradually, you get used to it at a slower pace. also, if you gained about 10 -20 pounds of fat would that affect your strength? its added body weight, its different than what youre talking about
