I feed them to my fish in my pond on my patio.
Birds, frogs, toads, and turtles eat them too. Some opossums like them, as do some raccoons.
Slugs generally eat fallen leaves first, helping digest them and break them down in to nutrients in the soil for plants. They also eat the bark of fallen trees, but not as efficiently as termites.
We have so many of them because their natural predators, toads, oppossums, and turtles are unable to live in suburban gardens without being killed or bothered by cats, dogs, and kids. We also prune and tend our gardens in such a way that slug damage is far more noticeable than not.
Gardening websites are full of information about how to kill slugs. I would love to say drowning them in beer did the trick, unfortunately the local stray dog in the alley drank it before the slugs did. There are some natural slug killers like salt, but too much salt around a plant can kill it. The best method for removing slugs and snails is to physically remove them by lifting up your potted plants and picking them up and putting them in a ziploc bag. You also need to find the other slug and snail hiding spots in your yard and do the same. (If you know of a friend with a pet toad, turtle, or fish, offer them some free food. I used to have some Koi that loved slugs!)
Good Luck.
