I lived south of Orlando, in Kissimmee near Disney. I always went to Melbourne beach. Just hop on 192 going east for about 40 minutes or so, and once you hit Melbourne turn right on A1A. If you are looking for beaches that are a bit less populated, then Melbourne is a good choice. It's nice to go out there and relax, you don't hear as much noise as you typically do out at Cocoa or Daytona, and you get a lot of sandy space to yourself. And hey, its the same ocean as Cocoa and Melbourne!
But if you don't mind the crowded beaches and noise then Cocoa and Daytona would be great. Cocoa has Ron Jon Surf Shop, several bars on the beach, and a pier with restaurants. I've always had a great time out there when I'm in the mood to party and not relax.
You can also take I-4 west, head out towards Tampa and visit some of the Gulf beaches. Its about an hour away to each coast from Orlando. You have endless options.

There are many beaches within an hours drive of Orlando. It depends on where you are and what you are looking for in a beach. Daytona is about 45 miles, as is New Smyrna. Daytona is more crowded, touristy and frankly kinda dirty. But they have a lot of bars and restaurants if that's what you are looking for. New Smyrna is quieter but the beach gets really small at high tide....makes it feel crowded.
A bit farther away, you have Cocoa...it is anywhere from and hour to an hour and a half depending on where you are coming from and what the traffic is like on the beachline. It is a nicer beach, in my opinion. Big wide sand and it also has a lot of bars and restaurants....check out Coconuts as it's right on the beach. (and then you have a real bathroom to use too. the main reason I go there, personally)
On the west coast, you have Clearwater, which an take up to 2 hours to get to. I-4 has so much construction that the traffic is hit or miss. I have done it in 90 minutes before. The beaches are clean and beautiful. There aren't many waves on the gulf coast so it's very relaxing and great for kids.
Enjoy your day at the beach!!

Depends on where you are in Orlando as it is a rather large, spread out city. I recommend New Symnra which is about 45minutes away on the East Coast.
