European Computer Driving Licence, or ICDL (International) as it is really called now is quite simple and well worth taking as so many employers are looking for people to have taken this as a condition of employment. It consists of 7 modules, all at Level 1, the first unit is probably the hardest because its getting to know your computer, like file management, knowing computer health and safety, data act etc. The rest, Word, Excel, Access, Internet etc are quite easy. The tests are usually taken on line so you know whether you've passed straight away. You get a passport looking certificate and a card which looks like a credit card - both quite impressive. I don't know what the cost is but the chances are if you enrol at a college or community education centre you might be eligible for funding. Also, you can do the course on line with LearnDirect though not sure if you have to take the tests separately.

Wait till September and enrol at one of those night school classes that they have at your nearest high school they are not expensive and they will put you though the computer driving license test its easy. Eight weeks One night a week for Two hours about £35 or £40 for the course and less if you are on benefits the test will cost you a bit more but you can check all this out at your local library because they run the same course and do the tests as well .Good Luck.
PS One lady on the same course as me payed £5 for the hole course and got to take the test for free be cause off the benefits she on. Luck Her.

I used to teach on the ECDL course. If your employer is paying, let them. You will learn new computer skills and impress your boss. Unfortunately, if you are funding yourself, the era of free computer training is practically over. I started teach in year 2000 when the government was practically throwing money at Colleges to offer free computer training. Now, the individual user has to fund themselves. It can cost anything from £40 to £200. Roughly.
I would say that ECDL is worth it, though. You are learning a new skill in any case and computers are the future!

I work for the NHS and they do it 'in house'. You only have to see someone when you take the test. It takes a long time to do. I started it 3 years ago and have to do it in between working (no time at home). Failed the first module and just haven't got the enthusiasm to continue. Not sure its all its cracked up to be. Good luck.
