What is the best way to add the salt to my fresh water tanks? It does not say on the box.

Just add a spoonful. Or, you could dissolve it in some water first. Either way, does not matter.

I use it. A table spoon per 10 gal. or less is what I would suggest. If you are having problems with disease it can help. I add salt once in a while after a partial water change. I tend to let the salt content drop until I think some fish might be having a problem. Then I do some small water changes and add salt. Salt is not necessary but it does reduce stress and improve gill function in most fresh water fish. I drop the salt into my power filter and let it dissolve there.

i have added it directly to a tank, but i cannot say that was a good idea, get a small bucket and mix a bit of salt in and add it to the water, helps to dissolve it a bit

I read the label on my salt container and it said 1 tbsp per 5 gallons.

Dissolve the correct amount in a container of water and pour it in. But I gotta tell you, in 15 years of fishkeeping without a disease or problem in any my tanks, you don't need it unless you have a problem.

It is usually a tea spoon per 1 gal so use a teaspoon, Or it could be a TABLEspoon per 5 gal,
