In light reflection microscopy, light is bounced off a highly polished surface from the light source to the microscoope lens. it is frequently used for studying opaque materials such as metallic minerals, where the technique is known as mineragraphy.
In a light transmission microscope, the light source shines through a very thin section of the material to the microscope lens.
