Sad to say, but he largely wasn't. Why do I say that? Simple. The Democrats have canonized JFK as a saint, yet they forget his most famous words: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." The same party that created our entitlement-minded society and expects the government to take care of everything for every citizen is spitting in the face of the man who advocated personal responsibility and civic participation.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was generally a good man (he had his faults to be sure, but he was no worse than anyone currently residing on Capitol Hill) and was generally a good President, but he made a lot of enemies and wasn't able to accomplish much while in office because those who were against him hindered him at every turn, especially those in the military and the congressional leaders who supported the military (or those who received money from Defense contractors).

It didn't help that someone had him killed before he could even announce his intention to run for a second term in office. The American citizens loved him, but the folks in D.C. hated him, and many saw him as a threat to their way of life and their way of doing business. That's how he ended up at the wrong end of an assassination plot (and for those who still say Oswald did it, don't insult our collective intelligence -- are you going to take the word of the Federal Government, who has sealed all records of the Kennedy assassination away until 2029, or are you going to take the words of over 40 witnesses in Dealey Plaza that day who said the shot that killed Kennedy came from the front and right of the motorcade and practically took his head off?)

He could have been more successful if he had avoided being shot and killed, but since those closest to him failed him, he never had a chance.

He was the second President of seven that I served under. On the day he died there were 61 legislative proposals in the Executive Office of the President (the West Wing) which he could not move through a Congress dominated by his own party. Within six months, Lyndon Baines Johnson had signed 59 of them into law.
As to what a second term would have brought, I don't think he would have finished that stint in office. Not because of a bullet. He was afflicted with Addison's Disease, an end-stage condition of the kidneys and we had yet to perfect the dialysis machine at that stage in history.
Even the famous quotation from his inaugaral address is a bit of plagarism. If you visit the Choate Academy where he went to school, you will find the following chiseled into the stone arch above the entrance to the administrative building:
"Ask not what your school can do for you. Ask what you can do for your school".

Right now in the US, the political climate is not right for a candid appraisal of this president. However, the recent book "Legacy of Ashes" shows, once again, ("The Dark Side of Camelot" was the last time) how "bad" (or unsuccessful) Kennedy really was.

What could he have done differently?
1. Kept his penis in his pants more.
2. Gotten over his macho infatuation with Ian Fleming novels and the Mafia.
On reflection, I'd say 1 and 2 are two sides of the same coin.

Of course he made mistakes, but he made everyone feel proud to live in America. His words inspired and captivated people. The world seemed to stand still when he died. His enemies even mourned his death. When Nikolai Krushchev heard of his passing, he began to sob.Now that is really amazing.
