I live in Melbourne, and there is no sure way to predict the weather at any time of year.
It should be getting warm in Oct-Nov, but that said, I have seen it hot dry and sunny on christmas day and I have also seen it freezing cold, raining and wet.
If I were you, I would pack 80% light clothing and throw in a jacket or sweater or 2 just in case.
There is a chain of factory outlet stores called DFO in 3 locations around Melbourne, which sell a huge range of clothing at cheap prices....yet still designer brands.
You could always buy what you need when you get here, I always travel light and come home with an extra suitcase of clothes no matter where i go.

It is spring in Melbourne during October and November. Yes it can be cold, but it can also be hot - especially in November.
Last year's Melbourne in October and November was an exercise in extremes. Yes, we had some very cold nights, but we also had some warm nights (coldest 5.2C, warmest night 20.5). We also had a number of hot days - the lowest daytime temperature was 14.8C and the warmest was 36.6. These temperatures are fairly typical, with the temperatures dropping quite dramatically once the sun goes down. Sometimes it changes dramatically from one day to the next!
I realise that what I am going to suggest may not help much, but I suggest that you bring a range of clothing to cover all extremes, including light clothing and swimsuit for very hot days and a coat or warm jacket for cold days/nights. On cold days, dress in layers so that you can take off something as you get warmer. (Oh, and a big bag to carry it all in!) If I am going to be out in the cold weather I will usually wear a long sleeve top, a jumper, jeans and a jacket, unless it is going to be hot, where I'll only wear a light dress or t-shirt and skirt or shorts..... listening to the weather forecast is vital during those months, as you can easily find yourself under or over dressed.
Don't forget to bring your sunglasses (as the sky and the light is different from the rest of the world), and a pair of comfortable walking shoes to see our beautiful city in comfort.
Remember that if you have forgotten something or feel that you haven't brought the right clothes - it will always be a good excuse for some retail therapy at our fabulous stores for some clothes shopping!!!!
I hope you enjoy your stay.

The standard joke about Melbourne is that it does not have seasons, it has samples. At that time if the year it definitely has samples and a lazy wind. Too lazy to go around you, so it goes through you. The best thing I could suggest is to dress like and onion...in layers. That way you would be prepared for any sample

This is spring time. Wear one layer or two in case it gets cool, or use a jacket or similar. But also take some light clothing such as t-shirts, short pants with you as hot days are supposed to be there too.
