They used a rookie pitcher that nobody had ever heard of (or cared about) in the finale of a three game set in which the Nationals lost heartbreakers the first two games. They know they are out of it and won't make the playoffs, so they took out a potential MVP candidate for a team who is not only in their division, but in the hunt for the wild card. He then proceeded to hit Ryan Howard, the very next batter. Did the Nationals plan it, or was it really not incidental? It seems argumentative...

There is no way that it was planned. Things like this happen all the time and it is just part of the game. The Phillies themselves never said it was intentional and all teams just have to deal with it when it happens to them.

The Nationals in no way planned on injuring Chase. The rookie pitcher had pitched very well in the minors and was worth a call up with given the injuries Washington have had with their rotation. He got roughed up early and I believe he did throw at Utley and Howard. But you nailed it, he was a rookie pitcher, inexperienced and unprofessional. I don't think he intended to hurt anyone, but he messed up bigtime.

This franchise hasn't been known for pitchers with good control since their last Pennant race as the Montreal Expos, around 1996 or so. They might not have been able to hit those batters if they tried. What's more, it would have made no sense to hit them on purpose. Not everything that looks fishy requires a conspiracy theory. If you really want one, why not look into the man who made the move to Washington possible, Jeffrey Loria, who might now be moving the Florida Marlins?

My first point: The way YOU put it, it sounds like a conspiracy. But it was purely accidental. Now, if they demote him and only bring him up against the Mets or Braves, and he plunks those guys, then yeah, I say they are up to something.

My second point: It is hard to hit somebody in the right way at the right spot with a pitch so they get hurt, so that discredits the conspiracy theory. Also, you couldn't have a specific target on that team to throw at, due to the aforementioned.

No, they didn't plan to injure Utley. It was an accident. Just like it was an accident when Matt Wise hit Pedro Lopez in the face the other night. Accidents happen and that's what it was.

Boy if that pitcher intentionally hit him there then I want him on my team because no one has that pin point accuracy! So this is absurd to say the least there is no way even if you were throwing at him that you could know you were going to hurt him in that way!

It did kinda seem pretty fishy. Although, if you think about it, a just-called-up pitcher is not likely to have the greatest control. I really think it was an accident, even though it was much publicized.

Your argument is very convincing but i do think it was an accident....we (phillies fans) don't have to be happy about the accident but it was just that........they say utley will be out for 4-6 weeks but knowing chase's personality.....i think he will work his hardest to get back sooner

Phillies fan!!!

WOW... you bring up something that, where i hate to admit it, has some legs. Do I think so? No... HOWEVER, if it can be proved, some people will be out of jobs and lose some money. I'd never like to think that way, but you bring up a point that seems plausible. They will blame it on nerves and such.
