Rays answer is correct. The mayans used two calendars. One based upon the apparent cycle of Venus. The other, which you refer to, based upon Earth's precession. These calendars are more accurate than Roman or Gregorian calendars have proven to be.
The Mayans divided their calendar into parts the same way we divide the Gregorian calendar into weeks, months, and years. One of their divisions was called a baktun. 13 baktuns added up to a Great Cycle. There are five of these in one Precessional wobble of 26,000 years.
All of the predictions which you refer to have come, not from the Mayans or their calendar, but from the last 20 years by persons living today in order to scare persons such as yourself, to make money, and to seek prominence on web sites. The Mayans did predict more earthquakes during this time but all other predictions including planets entering Earth's orbit are fanciful fiction.
To learn about the Mayan calendar, go to a library. Read books by John Major Jenkins. Stay away from 2012 websites.

There is no planet "entering" earth's orbit in 2012.
The Mayans made 2012 the last year of the present "long count" because at the winter solstice of that year (Dec. 21), the Sun, as seen from Earth, will appear the closest to the Galactic centre.
This happens every 25,800 years.
The next day will be the first day of the next long count. Happy New Long Count. I expect a gift.
5 long counts later, it will happen again: The Sun, at winter solstice, will appear closest to the Galactic centre again.
This is simply an apparent alignment. It will do nothing (no deadly rays will be "focused", no black hole will jump out and swallow us). However, lots of people will get their fun out of scaring other people. Same deal as in 1999 with Y2k (remember? that is when all our computers blew up and we all died).

There isn't, the only threat of that kind we face is being hit by a Near Earth Object (a rogue asteroid to you and me).
Don't worry too much, every couple of years there's a crackpot spouting a Domesday prophecy, supposedly from an infallible source. Remember the millennium? Or the heavens gate cult?

Gosh aren't people more interested in what the Mayans, whoever they are, did for fun, pleasure and sex, then in how they knew what day it was? I bet the Mayans themselves were more interested in fun, pleasure and sex then in what day it was, But I'm just a dumb blonde how would I know, Kiss Kiss

there is no planet coming into the earth's orbit, and when we set up their calender year, we were off by some time. So once dec. 23rd 2012 comes around nothing could happen because of our setup. we could be off 7 years, we could be off 7 days...and the world won't end all suddenly. The only things that could possibly be happening, are the polar caps switching, which has happened before. and its not like, boom, they switched, it takes years upon years upon years upon years...okay? nothing to fear, life won't be ending anytime soon...

I think you're referring to an asteroid that was detected a few years ago, that will pass very close to the Earth in 2012. It's going to miss.
