i think the problem is hero worship - people are drawn to athletes based on on-field attributes (leadership, skill, toughness, etc) and expect them to be the same way off the field...
few if anybody fell in love with mike vick the PERSON, its mike vick the PLAYER we know and love (or hate if you like an opposing team)
if you separate on-field from off-field, you HAVE to support that person, the on-field person hasn't disappointed you, its the off-field person you DON'T KNOW who has
as a longtime bulls fan, when dennis rodman was doing all of his wild antics off-court, it wasn't cool, but he played his heart out on the court and regardless of whatever happened off-court i respected that, because that was the side of rodman that i as a bulls fan was personally invested in....
so as a falcons fan (and one specifically because of vick) i MUST support him, cuz thats what fans are supposed to do, thats why san francisco cheers barry bonds when everybody else villifies him, HES THEIR GUY, and if your guy is in some trouble you try to help him out of it, that's LIFE.... so until concrete irrefutable evidence shows that bonds knowingly cheated then they must support him...
if evidence shows that vick was directly involved, then he must pay the price..... but until proven guilty, he deserves the benefit of the doubt if you're a past supporter....
PS i think people need to put athletes/actors less on a pedestal and look to more relevant role models (parents, good police officers, fire fighters, etc.)
PS PS *sigh* getting ready to "welcome" the joey harrington era in ATL.... NOT A PROMISING PROSPECT

"Eating babies?!" Come on dude, seriously, that's inappropriate. I know that athletes are human at the end of the day, plus the fact that they have more access to cash than a normal person means they're more likely to mess up on a grander scale. However, the law is the law. If you break it you go to jail (God, I hope Lindsay Lohan goes, she should have been in jail before Paris.) True it depends on the degree of the law. Ben Roethlisberger is my favorite player and true he did something moronic last year with the motorcycle accident, and he did break the law because he was riding with an expired permit (PA has no helmet law), I'm willing to bend because he was the only one who got hurt. But if he assaulted or killed anyone (or animal, but he's a HUGE dog lover, he owns 2 dogs and bought his hometown police dept. a new police dog when their old one was killed), I'd probably be sick.
That's my 2 for 2.

It hard but i tend to find myself rooting for great people/players. for example im quite lucking being born in raised in san diego, Tony Gwynn and of course LT are my favorite athletes. Vick has always had a character issue and that would bother me. when Shawne Merriman had the steroid issue last year i found it hard being able to sport his jersey. Vick is an aweosme player but life is more important than the NFL. and when our kids are watching every move these guys make i cannot support that.

Absolutely not! If he killed your dog would you still cheer him on? How about he harms your family? Where do you draw the line? I think it's sickening when people take sports more seriously than life. As a Steeler fan, when controversy arises, they part ways with that athelete... Barry Foster, Bam Morris. If for some reason Ben R was in Vick's place, I'd want him gone.
For those who say "innocent until proven guilty", you are foolish. They found DEAD DOGS at HIS HOME. Do you really think he was oblivious? If you do, than you yourself are oblivious.

Im a die hard saints fan and I can honestly say if Brees were in this situation I would NEVER wear that damn jersey again. It would sit and hang in my closet......I will still root for my team, because in my book, there are the Saints and everyone else.......I would still root for him on the field so my team wins....however, I wouldnt wear the jersey and I wouldnt want him to stay on the team.
they should all get the boot...pacman, vick, tank, and anyone else with trouble.

Simple as this, if found guilty then "HELLS NO"
Donovan McNabb is a Icon in my family, I am a fan not only of his talent but of his class he has shown on and off the feild. Also I am the parent of three boys who look up to the atheletes and try to emulate what they see these guys do. For me to support McNabb if he was found guilty of an offense such as this or other federal charges then it would be the same as me saying his behaivor off the feild is ok also. And thats not going to happen.,

I'm a huge packer fan, have been since I was a kid. It doesn't matter which Packer player gets in trouble I'm usually rooting for them till the end. Been through stuff like that with James Lofton to now Nick Barnett. Innocent till proven guilty is the way I see it. It would be nice if the media would leave it alone until they find out for sure if he's guilty or not. This way he would not have a bad name until it's final. Hope he's innocent myself.

Been a Falcons fan since before they brought this hugely overrated, overpaid prick under center. As God is my witness, if this jackass ever plays another down in this league, I will never - ever - watch ANY NFL games on TV again.

Honestly, if it was a smaller thing like illegal drug use, I'd probably be OK with it. But the fact that there's so much evidence and that he keeps denying it with a bunch of bull, makes me see that I'd probably be hard pressed to root for my Eagles if, say, Brian Westbrook did that.

If Tom Brady was in this situation, I would lose all respect for him...but since he has that thing Vick doesn't called CLASS, I don't have to worry about it...
