Do you think the above named individuals are heroes or are they just doing a job? DO you see them any differently than the garbage man, the service station clerk or the accountant? I often wondered how other people thought about these individuals and if they hold them in higher regards than other working individuals or if you see them as another working Joe.

I think they are just doing a job. They are brave, but not heroes to me. A hero would be someone who did those things out of love for fellow man and was not being paid.

My dictionary defines a hero/heroine as a person of exceptional quality. Based on the cops I meet and how they treat people and curse at them, there's no way they fit the bill.

pizza man, ha ha that's funny. I don't see officers & firefighters as heroes just because they do that job. But they do have more opportunities to be a hero b/c of the situatons they are put in. I think people in the service are heroes b/c although peace is a lovely idea, human nature will never allow it. So since there will always be "bad" people thank goodness there are people willing to join the service! But my garbage man is my hero too, makes life much easier & less stinky!

If they are genuinely good people and do the job faithfully, then YES! The people I DON'T consider heroes, that the American media, therefore society, focuses on are athletes... This "Shaquille O'Neil - children's weight show" is meant to fool the public into believing that Shaq is a hero because of it... The show is making him richer. Richer than any one person needs to be... yes, he is helping (or trying to) but it doesn't make him a hero. He was a hero in my mind when he selflessly followed the perpetrators of a crime & reported an incident of gay-bashing in Miami, leading to their arrest!!! He didn't get paid at all for that.

They are heroes in my eyes. A garbage man has never run into a burning building and saved not only human but animal life on a daily basis. An accountant doesn't solve crime. You get the picture. ☺

ABSOLUTELY!!!

Not many other professions go to work each day in any weather to put their lives in danger for complete strangers. I know many firemen and I do consider them heroes. They are away from their families for 24 hour shifts and are woken up throughout the night for fire and rescue calls. Some of these brave men and women have even died on the road in traffic accidents. Give credit where credit is due. If your house was on fire I bet they may become heroes rather quickly.

They are heroes because they do their job. Most of the time people don't notice them, but when they are doing their job, they are heroes.

Any job where a person is willing put himself in harm's way for the sake of the safety and well-being of others is definitely a hero in my eyes....
