Anyone have any trick on catching fish? my rust angel has a fungal infection and i cant catch him to put in a doctor tank. He is in my main reef tank and i cant catch him through the rock work. So anyone have any tricks to catching fish in a tank with intricate rockwork and many corals that i do not want to disturb?

nosoop i have tried all of that hahah he is impossible now he see me approach the tank with the net and goes to the one unreachable spot. Me and my girl were in there with 1 net each and one hand each trying to get him in but he is to clever. i think i either have to break the whole tank down or move all the corals and inverts to the doctor tank and treat the main tank.

take an empyt 1g water jug, partially cut the top off so you have a "flap, place some food in the center, when he goes in close the flap and raise the jug out, be quick though and support it well, it will not be very stable, kinda like trying to pick up a wet paper bag, i hope your Q tank is close lol. and after this buy one of those fish corrals, or traps. this is only one trap, reef-central.com may have a thread or 7 on fish traps as well, oh and the trap is easier to move out of the tank with some holes in the sides, but be sure they are high enough so the fish stays under water, the first time i tried this one i poked holes in the bottom *stupid lick* lol

A fish trap would be the idea thing. Some places actually rent them! But if getting one or making one how bout this..

Get a CLEAR contanier (like a tupperware thingy) Big enough for the Rusty.. Now he knows what the net is.. use that to herd him into the clear one! Scoop him up water and all! They can't really see the clear one and will go right on in. And it is better for them than a net.. won't catch a fin or gill in a container like a net will! May take a few tries and, unfortunatly, you might have to tear your tank up to get him.. But if he is sick you gotta get him out! I can't tell ya how many times I've done that one. (have looked at my pics!!?).. gggrrrr

Try putting food in the tank to make it come to the top. Then get the net under the fish and bring it up slowly. It always works for me. Remember, nomatter how bad you want to catch the fish you need to be gentle or you could hurt it.

Okay then try cornering him. Get him at the top of the tank in a corner and put one net under him and one beside of him. This way he can't go over, under, or around the nets. I sometimes have to do that when trying to catch my australian rainbows.

Use one hand to chase him through the corals and rocks and use the other hand to hold the net in an ambush position. You should try catching Yo-yo Loaches (even in a tank w/o rocks and corals!). Good luck!

Patience is the keyword here
What I always do with fish that are hard to catch is as follows
First of all I don't put my hand in there
I don't chase them to hard, because it will only stress them out
I take my net and go with slow movements through the water, try to corner them and usually am able to catch from the back, or sometimes even from the front
Remember, never fast movements, he will only go wild and you will stress him out

Hope that helps
Good luck

There are fish traps made specially for catching fish in established marine tanks. See you local fish store to purchase or go to:

http://www.floridadriftwood.com/fish_trap.htm

And build your own. The hole can be cut to any diameter to accomodate all sizes of fish.
