what are the steps to calculate this?

35/125? i know the answer comes out to 28%

Suppose you scored 35 out of a possible 125. Your % mark would be given by:-
(35 / 125) x 100%
35 x 4 / 5 %
7 x 4 %
28%

Please note that I am not suggesting you would score such a low mark!!

You should see that 35 and 125 are each divisible by 5, so
35/125 = 5*7 / 5*25 = 7/25. Now if your really smart you would see that since 25*4 = 100, you should multiply the 7 times 4 to get 28/100 which is 28%.

Find factors in common to reduce the fraction:

35/125 both have 5 as a factor, so take it out:

7/25
which is 28/100 or .28 or 28%
