i have just been given a snake pendant and was told it was a native american piece of jewelery. i have also been told that the symbols mean things but my friend is not sure about this one.

Depends on who you talk to and where they come from. In some Natve groups, snakes are revered as powerful and spiritually strong and generally good. However, in other groups, snakes are bad (taboo) for instance, in my culture (Apache) snakes are bad and we are not allowed to touch them.
