gandalf said something to merry and pippen after he was resurrected as Gandalf the White. He said that after he fell into the underground lake he chased the balrog around and also saw nameless things and would not speak of them. Any idea what they are?

They fell into a place that even the Balrog was terrified to enter. You can Assume this is a literary device as is Ungoliant; An evil descended from the darkness of the void, into the world of Illuvatar.

It is important to Tolkien to give evil something to be afraid of. I think this is a powerful device and it humanizes evil which is vital to his work and to our understanding of ourselves. It is also a great device to show Gandalf confronted with something beyond his ability to understand or rationalize. It shows the World itself as a thing of great antiquity, awe, power and private intent. So much of what i love about Tolkein are these elements.

It is not just a wold of good versus evil but of evil versus evil and servants versus servants, and the lost battling the enslaved and so forth. Such perfection in its analogy of our lives, both internal and otherwise.

If they're so bad that even Galdalf won't speak of them, they're probably too terrible to even think about. We're probably better off.
