Any professional practice (nursing, medicine, policing, teaching) which is informed by research into "what works". There is a lot of debate whether so-called evidence-based practice is removing discretion and creativity from workers. Many question the evidence base in areas such as social work as few properly conducted studies are available and the "evidence base" is often tenuous and based upon fashionable prejudices. A good example is in probation work whereby offenders are sent off to "cognitive-behavioural therapy" to explore the root causes of their offending. This is based upon untested psychological theories and some studies show a nil effect - yet the proponents insist on calling CB groupwork evidence-based practice or "What Works".

This is doing something that has been proven to work by research.
For example, there has been loads of reserch around about the benefit of washing your hands to stop infection. So therefore hand washing is an evidence based practice (cos there is evidence that its beneficial) however, spitting on them and wiping them on your jeans is not evidence based practice cos there is no evidence to support this as a effective way of preventing the spread of infection.
