Well, assume he was 30, and would live 40 years in jail, 11 life terms would be 440 years.
The only reason they do that is to ensure he'll never get out on parole.

Multiple life terms NEVER translate into any number of years. He was convicted of at least 11 separate charges and was sentenced to life for each. If any of the charges are overturned on appeal, the others will still carry a life sentence. The reason is to ensure the person is released in a body bag.
