i usually turn my ac thermostat up to 80 degrees when i go to work and then turn it back down to 70ish when i get home. is it better (cost wise - energy efficient) to do it this way or does it take more energy to cool back down than if i would leave it around the same temperature all day?

Maintaining a consistent temperature is the only way to save money. When you turn the temp down, the whole house (including the furnishings) have to cool down which would have it running longer to get there. We set our AC at 76 and leave it there. Have never had an issue with our billing.

It is much easier to keep temperature than to hit temperature. Another words to maintain a certain temp is easier on the equipment that gaining the temperature.

I suggest getting a set back thermostat that you can program to come on a little while before you come home so you are comfortable upon arrival and let it control the temps automatically.

Comfort costs money. I would trade efficiency for comfort any day, that' why we have air conditioner anyway. The system I mentioned is the best efficiency with the most comfort.

I've always been told 72 degrees was best, but I'm sure everyone will have an opinion. Besides, I would think it depends on how insulated or economical your house is. I'd say see how long your a/c runs when you do get home. If it's stifling before you turn it down and it runs unsually long to cool off, maybe set it to 78 degrees and see if that evens it out more. I'd try a couple of degrees lower until I find one where it's not too uncomfortable when you get home and doesn't take unbearably long to cool off! Also, keep track of your electricity bills - make your own opinion about what works best for you and your household!
