I was thinking amputee or just thinking of mean kids coming up with a song or something to do with " I am peeling ya"? The other thought was the name of an amplifier/ guitar brand. If it has a nationality then maybe if its not uncommon where it originates it might not be targeted as an unknown name. Coming from some one who knows what it is like to have a weird name in the eyes of your peers. I also have a friend who was Arianna and was constantly accused of growing marijuanna (spell?), if you are choosing names the best thing to do is figure out the worst possible nicknames and decide if you could have handled it as a kid. Some times children just can't avoid getting a horrible nickname, it may end up having nothing to do with their actual name!!

It sort of sounds like some kind of intimate feminine hygeine product...

I guess it would be Greek or Italian if I had to assign a nationality to it.

You asked for honesty and honestly, the first thing I think of when I say "Ampelia" is "oompa loompa" from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
