It depends on which pound you are talking about.

The standard, everyday pound is the avoirdupois pound (from the French, meaning goods of weight) , and is 16 ounces. It is equivalent to 453.59 grams. One avoirdupois ounce is equivalent to 28.35 grams.

But if you are talking about gold or jewelry, you might be talking about Troy pounds, which are 12 troy ounces, and equivalent to 373.24 grams. A troy ounce is equivalent to 31.10 grams, and hence is slightly heavier than the avoirdupois ounce.

There were also other pound weights used in the past; for example the Tower pound (12 ounces or 340 grams); the Merchant pound (15 ounces or 437 grams); and the London pound (16 ounces, or 466 grams). These are all now defunct, and even the Troy weight is no longer in common use.
