Have you tried Nero or Roxio burning softwares? Nero works great on my DVD writer.

First you have to buy a dvd writer, then simply take out your cd writer drive and input your dvd write.

You will probably need to install a dvd burner. They make combination dvd/cd burners now so that may be the best option. There's no way that I know to covert a cd writer to a dvd burner.

Uhh... Do you have a DVD writer installed already and you need to know how to use the software correctly?
Or do you want to unscrew your computer case, remove the CD burner, and put in a different drive that burns DVDs also? Please be more clear.
Thank you.

You probably have a CD-Writer / DVD player.
You can buy a DVD-Writer for about $50.00 and install it in your computer. (Very Easy!)
If we're talking about a laptop, it will cost a biy more.
the really good news is that a DVD-Writer can write to DVDs AND CDs, which are two different formats.

if you have brought a new dvd writer and you arre not going to use old one anymore just open cpu case and unplug the datacord(flat) and power cord and insert your new one there before doing it look for the jumper above the pins in old one and set it as same as the old one (mostely in master if hard disk and cd drive are connected seperately, or in slave if they are connected in same datacord)
alternately u can keep both the drive, if your hard disk and cd drive are connected seperately and there are pins remaining to connect.
if the cd drive doesnt work it may be most due to jumper setting faults
jumper is a pin which can be reconnected to make drive slave or master

you can't "change" the physical attributes of a drive. If you have a cd w/r drive and want a dvd r/w drive, you'll have to buy one, install the drive and install the software that was written for your device.

Without knowing what's wrong with it - is it a hardware or driver issue? - it's difficult to assist you.
If it is a hardware issue and the drive is no longer under warranty then it may simply be a matter of replacing the drive as it generally isn't cost effective to attempt repairs on them.
