"Chick lit" is a term used to denote genre fiction written for and marketed to young women, especially single, working women in their twenties and thirties. The genre's creation was spurred on, if not exactly created, by Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole diaries which inspired Adele Lang's Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber: The Katya Livingston Chronicles in the mid-1990s.
Chick lit features hip, stylish female protagonists, usually in their twenties and thirties, in urban settings (usually London or Manhattan), and follows their love lives and struggles in business (often in the publishing, advertising, public relations or fashion industry). The books usually feature an airy, irreverent tone and frank sexual themes. The genre spawned Candace Bushnell's Sex and the City and its accompanying television series.

RE:
What exactly does 'chick lit' mean?
I hear the term thrown around and what does chick lit mean? Is it just stories about women? Or by women? a friend said it meant literature that was more analytical. Another said it was anything from a female perspective. What say you?

I'm bugged when almost ANYONE reads teen chick lit, PERIOD. Now let me clarify that statement before you jump on me. If you clearly know that the writing is bad, plots are cliche and pander only to your fantasy, then why are you reading it? Yes, I understand that they're guilty pleasures, and it's fine to read them purely for entertainment. However, there's plenty of people out there who live and breathe mediocre chick lit targeted for preteen to teen girls, and they honestly think those are the only books worth reading. It's their attitude that makes me very wary of chick lit and people that are very vocal fans of it. However, is it strange that you actually mention that it's considered okay for a girl to read a guy-oriented book. You say it's okay because they're action packed and gritty, so it's okay for girls to look for the most popular action novels, but it's not okay for guys to look for the most popular romance novels? There's very few romances from the boy's point of view, because romance is usually not encouraged for male readers. Why should they have to struggle to find the few male oriented ones, when there's so many mainstream books that are already published? There's also the fact that women do tend to be more turned on by reading romance and erotica. Men are more visual, that's why there's pornography. In romance novels, they focus on the feelings, the buildup. In the average chick lit novel, you won't get two chapters detailing every little bit of the "consummation", because why bother letting it be so vivid that you can picture it exactly when there's porno to do the same thing? If it bothers you that guys are "crawling in" on chick-lit, then shouldn't men have the right to be bothered by women "crawling in" on the action genre? But I bet you if a guy came in and asked "Does it bug you when girls read action books", ALL the girls in here would screaming "YOU STUPID SEXIST MALE CHAUVINIST PIG". EDIT: I wasn't saying that you were a vocal chick lit fan. I was referring to people that are very vocal about their love for chick lit and how they think it's a superior novel genre. Which part of that is unclear to you? Also, when you're asking a question like this, be straightforward. Is this your opinion or is it not? If you just want to know how other people think about it, for goodness sake SAY SO! Being coy and saying "how would you know it was even MY opinion? ;)" means you're just asking for people to misinterpret your question. The first thing you say is that it may or may not be your opinion, and then at the end you "So, I've voiced my opinion, what's yours?". Thus, people replied with the knowledge in mind that it IS your opinion, and now you say that it isn't? I'm sorry, but it sounds SO stupid that it has to be pointed out. Don't complain about the type of responses you get. You yourself was purposely unclear. Anyhow, if it ISN'T your opinion, then why are you taking our responses so personally? Honey, just drop the act. It clearly IS your own opinion that you think guys who read chick lit are annoying.

I may be incorrect, but I believe that it means lighthearted reading (chick for female -- literature) similar to 'chick flicks' which are lighthearted romance movies typically seen by females. (I'm personally not into 'chick flicks' though just fyi ;)
