I'm not so much refering to people who spell words like necessary - neccessarry etc. More to those who use words like duz, lyk, m8 etc. Ok I appreciate that todays mobile culture has a lot to answer for but PLEASE people....learn to use your language as it was intended.

PS. I don't profess to be perfect myself but at least I make the effort.

No offence to those who do the same by the way

@ A.S.

I appreciate that as someone who does not use English as a first language you may use certain words (if that is the right word to use) in place of what you should use. I fully realise that the English language is hard to master due to its somewhat complexity. ie words like their, there, they're.....bow, bough....bass,base etc etc. My gripe is not aimed at yourself or others like you but at those individuals tho despite ten or more years learning the language still have problems using it.

OK whinge over.............

That's the fascinating thing about language- it is a living, growing thing! Like it or not, it changes and evolves.

Hard to agree or disagree. Either way it is better to be understood using childish language, which sometimes is appropriate than not understood at all. At the end of the day it is how you've been brought up and the era in which you have lived. Sometimes we can learn from new ways and the youngsters of today can learn from the past. It's a two way thing. Communication is an amazing thing it's not just about words on their own it's what's behind them, feelings, and things that are not said are often more powerful.

I agree with you! As soon as the American public schools stopped using phonics as the basis for reading, and started using the "Whole word" method, children did not learn how to properly sound out words to spell correctly. It was a great disservice to an entire generation of kids. I am glad to see that they realized what a disaster that was and got back to the basics.

I agree with you! It is disconcerting that only a few people can write a sentence without spelling errors. Mobile culture has done a lot of harm but I think people are just lazy and not really concerned about the effects of their bad spelling!

Orthography seems to be a thing of the past. No wonder that 'estuarine' English is becoming prevalent. The BBC are having difficulty recruiting those who can even speak properly.

I agree. To abbreviate for texting or txt'ing is fine, remember shorthand ? Saying b/c instead of because or w/ for with. What kills me is when a sentence is unreadable. It's more than innocent spelling mistakes, it's entirely the wrong words, missing words or who knows.

The IM abbreviations really irritate me. And that is not 'language' evolving, it's laziness pure and simple.
