My week-old niece is very healthy, eating well and sleeping well. We've noticed that she has a little tear at the corner of her eye, that is there continually. It doesn't look like an infection, and we were just wondering what it was, as she doesn't seem worried by it at all. Any ideas?

Just in case this helps, we're having hot, dry weather at the moment, about 35 degrees centigrade.

Thank you!

Two of my boys had this - a clogged tear duct. Easy to take care of, but it may take a while to clear (2 months with my second baby). Take a warm washcloth and with your finger, massage the inside corner of the eye. This will help unclog the duct. However, if it is still clogged waaaaayyyy down the road, there is a procedure the doctor can perform by inserting a tube (I believe) into the duct to relieve it. It's worth asking about at the next doctors appointment, but not something to fret about in the meantime.

Both of my children had blocked tear ducts. My first had to have surgery twice (not common) to clear it up. My second cleared up around 4 months.

It doesn't hurt them they just have tears that aren't going down the tear duct. When the baby gets older she will most likely rub it and it will get all red and look kind of bad.(like it might hurt) but it won't.

Massage the eye right by the nose this will help to open the tear duct. clean the eye with water on a cotton ball when you massage it. If you aren't sure about doing this ask the dr. at the next visit. She isn't in any pain.

It could simply be a blocked tear duct which is seeping a bit of discharge. This is not a big deal and, most often, the tear ducts clear themselves. Just to be on the safe side, check with the paediatrician. The doctor can show you a way to massage the duct so it will clear - if that is indeed what it is. This happened with my 1st child, and the duct cleared in just a few days.

A blocked tear duct with a mild milky discharge is very common. Treat with massage and warm compresses as others have stated. Tear duct probing should be postponed to six months or longer in most cases, in my opinion.

Copious thick yellow discharge with redness and swelling of the eyelid suggests infection that should be treated immediately.

Maybe something is irritating her eye? A blanket fiber?
