Because our society is still permeated by the stench of racism and sexism, no matter how many people try to deny it.
Many voters still feel that a woman is too emotional to handle the responsibilities of such a powerful position.
Other concerns by the same people include:

Male leaders of foriegn nations may not take a woman seriously or may view America as weak as they view women.

What happens if she gets pregnant while in office. (don't laugh, i have heard this argument.)

The rest of us, who do not share these views, realize that many people do. We won't take a chance on wasting our vote on someone who isn't going to win because of these views, held by other people, similar to the same reason we will not vote for an indpendant, even if we like them.

For a speech class where you HAVE to debate a certain way, here is an idea

I think your biggest point would be other cultures around the world. Other cultures don't view women as we do and would have a hard time with a woman president. Especially in the current world climate. Most of the countries we worry about most right now (Iran for example) how would they deal with a woman president given their cultural view of women? But even in 20 years it is very likely those cultures will not change their views on women that quickly.

Just the fact of "Political Correctness". If people have to mindful of being "Politically Correct" whilst speaking of a woman or an African American for that reason than chances are the political base will not be large enough. To top it off there are many Americans whom will NEVER vote for a woman or an African American. I rest my case with...In an effort to be "politically correct" I would vote for Condi Rice as president. Lest I be labeled a racist for my true conviction that some, if not many Americans, are ignorant. Racism and the thought that women are second class runs so deep most don't even realize that they are susceptible to it's insidious persuasiveness when they finally get into the voting booth and pull the handle.

The female candidates are either not qualified or are generally not liked.

If a good female candidate was to run she could and would get elected and I think it will happen before the next 20 years. That is 5 presidencies.

It is just like any other candidate.

Nowadays though it is a popularity contest among the MTV voters. people don't really realize who they are voting for. Just the name they have heard most.

Things look set to change this election, but that is my optimism acting up again.

If it was a Margaret Thatcher type there would be no problem but not a political opportunist like Clinton. Even women dont want a woman president- interesting

I think a woman should be able to become president some day they are just as smart as men and work just as hard and make great incomes today they run the home why not the country.

If we had a conservative woman running, we would have a woman in the white house next term. I will not vote for a socialist if they were dripping in diamonds. Its not about the sex, it about the socialist platform she is running on.
