What is the real purpose of a crib bumper? We have one on our 8 month olds crib and I just don't see how it is anything but dangerous. She moves around so much that she ends up with her face pressed up against it while she sleeps and I'm afraid it may suffocate her. Can someone tell me what the reasons are for these things. Thanks

Take them off. They were supposed to soften the bars, but more than one baby has suffocated. Just get rid of them.

As everyone has said, they keep little arms and les in, and heads from bumping. They really come in handy ith an active sleeper, which it sounds like you have. At 8 months, he should be able to move if he is having trouble But if you are worried, try moving the bumper up an inch or 2. This will still protect him, but if he gets too close he will still be able to breath. Once he is pulling up and standing in his crib is when I would remove them so he does not use the to climb out of the crib. Good luck!

Crib bumpers are good for when the baby is tiny and you don't want them bumping their head or arm or leg on the side of the crib. It is their to cushion them. Once the child is old enough to use them as leverage for being able to help themselves climb out of the crib, they become more of a danger than not. So you should remove them before that stage.

So they don't bang their heads on the crib....
If you're worried about it - just take it out.
I have 3 kids and my daughter is 7 months old.
We've used a crib bumper with all three and had no problems.

Yes, they are to protect the baby's head from getting hit. But I personally think they are VERY dangerous, and they recommend not using them due to suffocation. Our 2nd child nearly suffocated when he was a young baby, as he had wriggled up and had his face pressed right against it. Only being young, he didn't have the strength to move away from it. Luckily my husband heard him through the moniter gasping for air and saved him. Obviously this doesn't apply to your older baby, but anyone with very young babies, please get rid of them. My husband removed it right then and there on the spot, at 2am in the morning, and threw it in the bin.

They are to keep your baby's arms and legs inside the crib. You can go on walmart.com or babies rus.com and lookup breathable bumpers. They keep body parts inside while allowing the child to breath if they press their face into it.

It's so they don't get their head or limbs stuck in the bars.
