menopause is not one event. it lasts for a long time, years. ovulation can become less regular but it still happens for the last time. how will you know if it is after the very last time? it's pretty hard to tell. even if you haven't had a period for one or two years, you could still have one more. after about 10 years from the last period, you are probably safe from being pregnant.

Menopause is a process not an event. As long as you are ovulating be that monthly, bi-monthly, annually you can become pregnant.

Even when you think you've stopped ovulating, you may not have. Chances are slim, but still there. If your last period was less than a year or two ago, there is still a very small chance.

the medical advice I received was - if you stopped having periods before you were 50, protect yourself for two years after. If you were over 50, protect yourself for one year after. After all, your body could produce just one more egg, and you wouldn't know it until your period arrived... so be careful!
