It is always best to turn OFF what you are no longer using with any electrical product. This will not only save power, but will also extend the life of your product as most hardware has a certain lifetime that you burn some of it away with usage.

I do believe compuers have like a lifespan of about 48000 hours, give or take, desktops more than laptops... so thats about 5.5 years of continuous operation... that doesn't mean you should keep your computer on for 6 years but really after 6 years you should probably buy a new computer anyways. Yes it slows down a bit, but it doesn't make a significant difference. So give it breaks once in a while to cool down but otherwise you can keep it on for quite some time...
PS about power, computers are very smart about power consumption, they only draw as much power as they need... so for example when you are playing a video game you are using more power than if it's just standing idol... an idol computer barely consumes any power, and definitely not enough to have an impact on your wallet...

I prefer to shut off my pc when I'm not using it - leaving it on leaves you open to hackers -
another good practice is to keep your printer turned off and only turn it on when you need to print something - leaving it on dries up the ink cartridge(s)
as for the speakers - I keep mine off until I want to either voice chat with my buddies or listen to music
