First You are not a Dork.Second Thanks for asking it's the kind of question I enjoy answering.Led Zeppelin(The Best Band In The History Of The Universe) Was formed in the late 1960 by The Guitarist(Best In Any Universe) Jimmy Page.He was a member of The Yardbird's, a 60's blues band (that also launched the careers of Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck Pagey's predecessors in that band btw) and also a world renowned studio guitarist (You know the riff in the Kink's song "you really got me" That was Him) When The Yardbird broke up he wanted to continue Touring so he got together with another studio musician John Paul Jones (Bassist and Keyboardist Extraordinaire) and decide to form a new band from the ashes of the Yardbirds.....trouble was they had a hard time finding a Vocalist until they discoverer the heretofore unknown Robert Plant and were impressed by his Powerful voice,a voice that could hold it's own against Pagey's blistering howling Guitar leads.Robert Plant recommended a childhood buddy of his for the Drummer by the name of John Bonham(who turned out to be the Greatest Drummer who ever lived God Rest His Soul) And the rest as they say is Classic Rock History.Thx again for your very very Kool Question.Hope my answer was helpful to you and anybody who call you a dork...they're a Jerk.

Origins as follows:
Jimmy Page came from the Yardbirds. Singer Robert Plant was playing in local Birmingham, England pub band (it was called Band of Joy as I recall from the box set liner notes but I'm not 100% certain of this), Plant recommended John Bonham for drums. It LOOKS like Jones got the bass job because the first job dropped out to become a photographer..that is, if I'm interpreting the poorly written sentence on Wikipedia correctly:
"When Dreja opted out of the project to become a photographer — he would later take the photograph that appeared on the back of Led Zeppelin's debut album — Jones, at the suggestion of his wife, contacted Page about the vacant position. Being familiar with Jones' credentials, Page agreed to bring in Jones as the final piece."

Jimmy Page was guitarist for the Yardbirds.
In 1968, when most of the other members left, he was given permission to put together the 'New Yardbirds', and go on tour.
He found singer Robert Plant, who suggested drummer John Bonham. John Paul Jones heard about it and auditioned for the bassist's spot.
They toured Scandinavia {the Yardbirds last commited tour dates} as the New Yardbirds.
Keith Moon predicted that they would "go down like a lead zeppelin".
Upon their return, they changed their name.
