Wallpaper actually began in ancient China, first because the Chinese invented paper, and secondly because they glued rice paper onto their walls as early as 200 B.C.

Although it is often assumed that the Chinese invented wallpaper, there is no evidence that it was in general use in Asia any earlier than the time of its appearance in Europe. The earliest wallpapers in England and France were hand painted or stenciled. During the 17th century, decorative techniques also included block printing and flocking, a process whereby powdered wool or metallic powders were scattered over paper on which the design had been drawn with a slow-drying adhesive or varnish. The oldest existing example of flocked wallpaper comes from Worcester and was created in approximately 1680.

At that time, drapes were not in general usage, so the question of matching did not apply.

somebody who wanted to make life miserable....i hate wallpaper with a passion!

There's a debate on what technically would be "wallpaper." It either came to being when angels were painted on rolls for Louis XI in France or it didn't exist until the printing press came around.

You decide. I'm sure that Louis probably requested that it matched the drapes. Poor man.....poor, poor man

Wall paper became popular during the Renaissance. Low-income people could not afford expensive tapestries to put on their walls so they would paste designs on to brighten up their rooms. Many prints were scenes from nature or had to do with religion.

The wallpaper was invented in Europe some time during the Renaissance. Early wallpapers were modeled after medieval tapestries, so they were not ornamental, but depicted mythological and historical scenes. They were printed in black and white and were often hand-colored after hanging.
