I mean, in 2007, what is the point of the Tories?

A (still) small bunch of white males going on about the way things used to be and marginal issues such as grammar schools. Can you imagine this lot being a credible government again?

Interesting.

I used to be of the "pendulum will swing back" theory.

In recent times though, I just think the Tories have no ideas. Say nothing positive about the future and just rely on bashing the government. Maybe that will be enough. But the sight of IDS in a Glasgow housing estate trying to portray his party as caring and having the answer to people's problems was laughable.

To my mind the guys with the ideas and vigour seem to be young Labour.

Next PM more likely to be Miliband (x2) or Balls or Alexander. These guys seem serious politicans.

In contrast after Cameron what have Tories got. Osborne must be most odious politican in recent memory. Surely loses the Tories 500 votes every time his whining voice and smug visage appears on screen.

Just my thoughts...al

I'm an American, but I try to follow British politics a bit. I think that the UK has a lot of the same problems politically as the US does, namely the electorate. :)

If you think about it, you have a problem with a lot of marginals being depressed economically. Neither party has done much to do anything about it with the exception of places like Manchester (but that's probably more about rate revenues from United).

You also have problems with the fact that, like the US, a lot of things that can hurt candidates politically are not anything they could have forseen or controlled. Like economic indicators.

It is very odd that the Tories have to win on their own merits, since the Lib Dems would largely side with Labor on most issues in Parliament. However, I think you will find that eventually the socialism in the UK will be taken too far, as it was before Thatcher took power, and the people will realize that, and you'll see more Tories being elected in Parliament. That's where it counts the most anyway.

Not unless they vote William Hague as Tory Leader. Although he was a useless last time as Leader I think he has gorwn up politically and is probably the only dedicated MP in the Tory party.

Grew up with politics as a boy and knows what he is talking about.

Not in the near future.
However there is very little fundamental difference between the two major parties - similarly in the US.
This explains the low rates of electoral participation - the public has lost confidence in politicians - they court our votes but dont listen to our views - biggest example is the unpopular Iraq war.

A piece of s**t in a suit still stinks.

Of course they will, politically people have very short memories, and after a new bunch are elected, and people have time to develop a dislike for them, the Conservatives will look like saviors
And the wheel goes round and round.

Not as you define them , but yes, conservatives will be in power again when the pendulum swings back around. It's not like the Democrats have a long history of excellence when in power either.

As far as I know at least one third of our current structure of government is the presidency, and it is conservative. Another third, is the judicial branch, and the supreme court is a majority conservative, that leaves one third which is liberal. BTW, if the dems really think their best shot at the presidency is Hillary, then you will see another conservative in the White House in 08'.
