If your views fit with a political party, start by contacting that party's state or local chapter. Go to their meetings, get to know them. Their activists will be the ones to support you and help you.
Talk to your elected officials on every level - city, county, state and national. Ask them how they got started.
Get a degree in public policy, government, political science or economics (or more than one if possible).
Network every chance you get and make sure to tell people what your aspirations are.
Make sure you walk your talk and keep your nose clean. Write letters to the editors of local newspapers to start getting your name and opinions on the issues out there too. And volunteer for causes you support.
Good luck!

Start at the local level. If you're a parent with kids in public school, run for school board. Or run for your town council, if you live in a town rather than a city. At this level, a desire to be involved and having good ideas are more important than experience. Once you have that under your belt, you can look to move to the next level.
If you want to start at the next level, try to become involved with your community. Get yourself known as someone who cares about a particular issue affecting your fellow citizens. Get your name and face out there. Be what is known as a community leader, and see if you can use that to move to a position to really make a difference.

hello jenna --
where have you been hiding
okay, your answer:
embark on your political career just as your dad did
first -- have a politically connected and wealthy father
next -- find yourself a karl rove (craves power, smart but unelectable himself)
also -- be reborn so you can dismiss your past errors
continue to avoid reading history for it will just confuse you
and shy away from preparation for leadership and governing for that will cause all kinds of conflicts -- when it comes making 'qualified' appointments, you will need as many albertos around you as you can get and qualifications such as his are not universally admired
good luck

First, you must spend 10 years as a snake oil salesman. Next, you have to be filthy rich. Then you must learn never to answer a yes or no question. Lastly, you must be able to lie with a straight face.

1) Learn to lie very well.
2) Learn to have sex with other people than your significant other on a consistent basis without getting caught.
3) Learn to con people into giving you their money and votes.
Only THEN, will you be ready.

Lie, appease, pander and make sure those around you can bend over in two seconds notice.
And that goes for BOTH PARTIES!

First, sell your soul to satan.
The rest will sort of work itself out.
Oh - someday you will pay. Forever.
