The "square" root is a number such that; when multiplied by itself, will give the answer: x*x

The square root of 16 can be 4 (because 4*4 = 16) and it can be -4 (because (-4)*(-4) = 16).

A "cube" root is one where the number needs to be multiplied three times, as in x*x*x

A "fourth" root, a number that is multiplied 4 times: x*x*x*x

The fourth root of 16 can be 2 (because 2*2*2*2 = 16) and it can be -2 (because (-2)*(-2)*(-2)*(-2) = 16).

Because 16 has an integer as its square root, 16 is said to be a "perfect square".

If you "square" (verb) 4, you get 16. 4 "squared" equals 16.

Anything that is multiplied by itself is said to be "squared".

If you have a room measuring 5 m by 6 m, the area is (5 m)* (6 m) = 5*6 m*m = thirty square metres. = 30 m^2

(where ^2 represents 2 as an exponent to the unit m)

---

When the "square root" is used as a function, then it must only allow one answer (otherwise, it is not a function). In such cases, mathematicians will almost always use the positive root:
The square root of 16 is +4.

There has to be a very special reason to define the square root of 16 as -4 (However, if you are working on a problem where you must do that, then it is allowed).

4.

HOWEVER...
Be careful when working on equations. You can't just "take the square root of both sides" and assume everything going to work out.

If you get to the equation a^2 = 16, a could be either 4 or -4.

just think, "what number multiplied by itself equals 16"

so, 4 times 4 = 16

therefore the anwser is 4
