Wow, I visited Yugoslavia back in 1982. I stayed in Beograd and Backa Topola, and went to Skopje.
It was winter and I arrived at night. I stayed with a brother of a friend, who treated me like a family member. He and his friends took me around, they didn't have to work, so we just ate, drank, went out, went to Mama's house for stuffed squash, went to a Slivovica (?) distillery. I found the people so fiery, lively, fun, and friendly, so hospitable! In the grocery stores at that time, people had to line up to buy cooking oil, but then they would fry their eggs in about a centimeter of oil.
They only had some 4 or 5 fruits or vegetables in the stores, but delicious yogurts, breads, cheese, and meats, wine, beer, coffee.
The only thing I remember not liking was that bars were very smoky with no ventilation, and men spit on the street all the time, so there were little wet circles all over the sidewalks.
I want to return. I hope Serbia is doing well again. I don't know what you think of Milosevic or if there is still tension there with Croatia, Bosnia, etc.
Zdravo!
