The original version was by 99 Luft Ballon by Nena, sung in her native German.
An English version, 99 red baloons, was recorded specifically for the British market because we are not very receptive to music sung in other languages.

The German group NENA. It is originally sung in German and called '99 Luftballons'. The single was launched in 1984 in the UK in and left in its original German language, it was only in America that the song was translated and sung in English and called 99 Red Balloons

It was a German woman called Nena. God that was one of the first ever singles that I bought. I loved it and actually still do!!
