A novel is a type of book. Lots of different kinds of writing can be made into books, like poetry, plays, short stories, essays, and non-fiction, but they aren't novels.
A novel is a long piece of writing (if it's like a novel but shorter, like under 200 pages, it's called a novella) that tells a fictional story. There can be several subplots, but there's usually one main story. This main story is often about the events in a person's life.
