No telling what the stupidest way could be. We probably still haven't heard it it. I know a pretty smart way though. There is actually no such thing as "up" at all. The sky for instance, is not up, but out, as away from the surface of the earth. Down is towards or closer to the surface.
If a hundred spacecraft took off simultaneously from different points around the Earth's surface, they would all be moving in quite different directions relative to one another. The one thing they would have in common is that they'd be moving "away from" the surface of the planet and out into cosmic space. All of which suddenly makes words like "Up" "Down" "In" "Out" not nearly as clear-meaning as we once thought they were, and the question "what's up?" just too darn complex to answer at all.
We may have to go back to the old fashioned habit of simply saying "hello" LOL or perhaps we should come up with a new one more in keeping with our developing cosmic awareness and say with a smile "What is your present trajectory?" Since trajectory means a course of direction, it makes sense. You are asking the person "In what direction of space and time are you planning to travel this fine day? Or - you could just go with what friends and family in my neck o'th woods often say when they meet..."Hey, wotcha doin'"?
